I get new VAs asking this question periodically when they've responded to a client request for work to be done, but they hear nothing from the client. When clients contact us to get work done, it's often at the last moment, or when things have gotten crucial for them and they need it done yesterday. When they hear from more than one VA, while it gives them opportunity for choices and to find one that they would click with the best, it also can often leave them feeling overwhelmed, unsure who to … [Read more...]
Combining passion and work
Those who have known me for awhile know that I have a passion for nature and photography, and over recent years, have been building up a photography website and tons of photos during my free time. Applying the skills I've learnt in my VA business, I've been able to do a number of things such as setting up a website and blog, Facebook page, and spending time networking with other photographers as I work on improving my skills and abilities in that arena. Two years ago I attended a 2 day … [Read more...]
Should I be receiving mail on behalf of a client?
Periodically requests might come through from a prospective client to receive mail on their behalf, and forward it on, as instructed, because they're out of the country. I believe this request could be fraught with problems, and possibly danger, and is one that should be handled with the utmost care and a lot of thought. Irrespective of your need, as a VA, to grow your client base, there are some client requests that should be handled with caution or declined. A recent request came from a … [Read more...]

Becoming a VA
I recently received an email from a young lady looking to start her own VA business but concerned that there might be too many out there for her to make a living as a VA. She wanted to know my thoughts. This is my response to her: I can appreciate the concern or fear that might be the case, but it's not. Getting clients works a number of different ways: Register with VA networks so you can respond to client requests, but also, so clients can find you online. Make sure you have a presence … [Read more...]
What do I need to do to get started?
On a VA forum the other day I read a question from a new member there, wanting to know how to get started and if she had to get any licenses or permits or anything? She is located in Los Angeles. This is my answer to her: Members here are from many countries so the answer to your question might not be as straightforward unless someone in your region is able to answer. What I can tell you that is really important, is that you find a local accountant who deals with small business. They'll be able … [Read more...]
20 new Virtual Assistant members at a special price!
Well, as you may know by now, this year marks 20 years in business for me. I've seen a real lot of growth, both in technology and in our industry. So many 'new' things have been developed and become every day activities or items we use regularly. Things like the Internet, mobile phones, digital TV, social media, websites, ipads, tablets, laptops, and the list goes on and on and on. I wonder what will be here in another 20 years' time that we probably haven't thought of today. Who knows? I … [Read more...]
Do you have a website?
Getting a website created, or creating one for yourself, can be a daunting prospect. When you're setting up business there are so many things to think about, plan and pay out for, that often the website gets put aside for 'later on'. The reality is that people need to be able to find you online. The medium for doing business is the Internet so it makes sense that you are available there for people to find you. And all your competitors are already there! When you email people do you use a … [Read more...]
Celebrating 20 years in business March 2014
It's almost here and I can barely believe it. Where have all those years gone? I do remember the excitement and the nervousness of branching out on my own and leaving the stability and safety of a government job back in 1993. Family and work events had been leading me to this point... where I would decide to be home full-time and develop a business so I could be home for my own children. As it turned out, it was also for my husband. There have been accidents and illnesses where he's needed me … [Read more...]
