Why did you start your Virtual Assistant business?

I was asked that question at a forum. Well, not me personally, but all the members of the forum. Got me thinking why I got started. I could sum it all up with just one word… frustration!

There were lots of other reasons but frustration probably sums it up well.

I was frustrated with growing up in a poor family and my parents not being able to afford things I wanted to do as a child.  I wanted to make sure I could give to my children things that were necessary or because I wanted to.

I was frustrated in the corporate world and the role I really coveted was being held by someone who had been there 20 years and looked like staying for another 20.

I was frustrated with trying to organise care for my kids when they were sick or on school holidays.

I was just frustrated fullstop so I decided to do something about it and start my own business.  It was something I’d tried to do earlier in life but didn’t really know what type of business and I did many party plan type businesses. But this time I equipped myself with a computer and printer and 20 years of admin experience and gave it a go… before the Internet started.

I’m still here and I must say it’s the longest I’ve stayed in a ‘job’.  Guess I must have found the right boss!  What about you?

Its interesting to hear what pushes us to become our own boss. I have a daughter with aspergers and needed to be working close to home, it was too stressful for her to have me leaving town each day to work. I’ve always done a lot of admin work, I had a new computer thanks to a lightning strike so setting up a secretarial business was a logical step. And not too much financial risk, if it did work out I hadn’t had to invest a lot of money. It turned out to be the best decision and nearly 8 years on, I’m still loving it.
