Over the past few weeks I've heard directly from two VAs who are owed a few thousand $$ from clients, and I have heard about other VAs owed by the same clients. This is a very disturbing thing to hear. While we are often on the watch for potential scams, sometimes real clients can be a concern too - a major one. Clients who want a lot of your hours very quickly in the working relationship is something to be wary of. What do you do when a client wants to use lots of hours of your services … [Read more...]
How do you know when a client is genuine?
I got asked this today, but admittedly, I've been asked other times too. While our industry attracts mainly good clients, we do get the occasional one that thinks they can use a VA for their own evil purposes - namely to launder money or trick someone into doing the wrong thing and therefore losing money. In the instance of today, there were many things in the emails sent to the VA that waved a red flag for me and I'll share them with you. This is a portion of my reply to her. The client had … [Read more...]
Do you have a Virtual Assistant yet?
I guess I shouldn't be really, but I still get amazed when I meet people, or hear from them via the phone or online, that they've just discovered our industry. Full time job as a Virtual Assistant (VA)

First and foremost, Virtual Assistants are business owner/operators - they provide a service to other business owner/operators. Several - not one. If you are in the situation of having only one client, then the tax dept in your country could see your working relationship as that of employer/employee which can open a whole can of … [Read more...]
A VA for each thing…
Somewhere along the line the general public (and clients) have been given the idea that you can engage one VA and get everything done! What a neat idea that is. Trouble is, it's usually far from the truth. The reality is that some VAs are generalists, i.e. they can do wordprocessing, database management, website management and even help with social media. I'm one of those VAs. But when it comes to including book-keeping, graphic design, public relations, marketing and even sales, then the … [Read more...]
