We're currently testing new directory software and all members will be invited to set up their new listing soon. What will this mean for our readers and potential clients? An easier way to search for a VA that suits your needs so you can contact them direct, or you can still work through the form we have to submit a request for work to be done. Check back here soon to see what we've done! … [Read more...]
Introducing our new Manager
I'm delighted to advise that long-time colleague and VA associate Anita Kilkenny has been engaged as the new Manager for VA Directory, as from today, 1st October 2020. Anita and I have actively worked together on a few committees and also co-founded both the Australian VA Conference and Australian VA Association together over 10 years ago. We have, very much, been aligned in our work in the VA industry both here in Australia and overseas. So it's very fitting that she should join me in … [Read more...]
Virtual Assistants and COVID-19
I had the privilege of being asked to participate in a panel discussion with 4 other industry leaders, Ingrid Bayer, Liz Parker, Rosie Shilo and Susan Wilkin, here in Australia, being run by AAVIP. It was a great discussion, with all sorts of ideas on what VAs can do to help their existing clients, and potential clients during this global time of crisis, as well as keeping their own businesses operating and looking after themselves mentally and physically. I thought I would share my own … [Read more...]
Tips For Working At Home
Talk of the coronavirus is rife at the time of writing this post. We're about 10 weeks or so into when the virus began to break out into the world. No-one knew what it might mean in their countries and at home, and we're, as yet, to learn how long this might go on for. So, as a consequence, there is lots of talk about people working at home - in those industries where it is possible. Working at home, though, can have its own challenges, especially for those who haven't done this before. It … [Read more...]
I want to make…
In some groups online I see new, or relatively new VAs talking about how much they want to earn a month and when by. I can see why they do it - putting it out there and the universe (may) help you get there. But sometimes, just sometimes, the figures mentioned are probably beyond achievable in just a few months, as much as they would like it to happen. We all would! However, there is preparation and thinking to be done to achieve what is spoken. This was my response to the VA hoping to make … [Read more...]
Using the term ‘Virtual Assistant’
Some people get hung up on the term VA or Virtual Assistant and I responded to a query awhile back, inadvertently upsetting the person who asked the question. That wasn't my intention at all. She'd asked about using the term 'Virtual Assistant' and if that made clients disrespect us. I didn't think so and my answer was taken in the wrong way. Sometimes, how we write can be misinterpreted for the way it was intended. But perhaps I should add some context to this. The original VA is a lady … [Read more...]
Do the research!
I feel saddened when I hear about VAs who have set themselves up as a trainer, or coach, or mentor or something and then start giving inaccurate advise. It's so important for you, the one who is wanting to learn, to do the research and make sure that whomever you're going to pay for advice, is qualified to give you that information. Or that the information they are giving is accurate. This includes how long they've been operating as a VA. Generally if it's less than five years - they're still … [Read more...]
No, not everyone can be a VA
Seems, these days, that if someone is between jobs, seeking to run a business but has no idea what, or has a job they hate and want to leave, the common cry is 'Why not become a VA? Anyone can do it!' Well, I'm here to say that's not the case. Not everyone. It takes a special set of skills but also a mindset and I would go so far as to say, a certain personality as well. Yes, most people can use a computer these days, but that doesn't mean they're good at it. Yes, most people are on the … [Read more...]
The Value of Professional Development
Regular readers here will know that I often write and talk about the importance of networking and belonging to groups to help build both you, and your business. I came across a post today, written by fellow long-time VA, Kathy Colaiacovo who is based in Canada. She shares about Professional Development: How One Membership brought her $625,000 + in Revenue. Well worth the read. If you've ever questioned how belonging to VA Networks and other business groups, going to conferences and other … [Read more...]
